I am working on various aspects of water and air pollution and their impact on human health- evolved pathophysiologies for fluoride, nitrate and aluminium toxicities and linkages between air pollution and human respiratory health; and developed low- cost technologies for removal of fluorides and nitrates from drinking water/wastewater. While our works on fluoride toxicity have resulted in the reversal of fluorosis, it has also brought out its synergistic association with aluminium in aggravating skeletal fluorosis symptoms. Our research on nitrate toxicity has resulted in implicating it for the first time for recurrent stomatitis, recurrent respiratory tract infections and recurrent diarrhoea. Advance bio processes for waste treatment, characterization of PM fractions in air, developing field kits for biological analysis are my current areas of research. Our recent works on antibiotic resistances among different bacteria found in sewage, which receives the discharges from hospitals also, has brought new light to evolution of a new concept of effective reduction to assess biological safety and bringing out the strategy of hybrid disinfection has been widely accepted for the reduction of regrowth post- disinfection, tackling of disinfection by products, and better elimination of ARB and ARGs, which are validated through detailed metagenomic analysis. Development of deep constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment for organics and nutrients through the application of new bacteriological pathways for nitrogen removal like Heterotrophic nitrification- aerobic denitrification, ANAMMOX and CNS cycles have received worldwide acceptance.
